The Lab at ILA is excited to present SIGNAL// +SYNTHESIS – an exploration of sound, texture, and communication. Headlined by PASSEPARTOUT DUO [Italy/USA], the event will feature debut sound collaborations from SEBASTIAN VIVIAN + WELLNESS CENTRE, ANONAME + LEWIS GODWIN, plus a creative staging installation by visual artist HARI KOUTLAKIS and lighting artist JOE F.
How do disparate ideas coalesce through collaboration? How do we mix the digital with physical // the ethereal with tangible? How do we reconcile structure with chaos? Each collaborative work presented will explore these queries through a series of sonic art presentations and creative installation, oscillating between ambient and discordant, contemplative and overloaded.

This Lab Rats session presented by Nicoletta Favari and Christopher Salvito of Passepartout Duo will be an in-depth look at the groups musical tools of choice and will discuss the ways in which creative independence can shape our approach to technology at large.
Nicoletta and Chris will share musical and non-musical inspirations that have imprinted their work and feature a hands-on exploration of their original electronic instrument – the Chromaplane.
Highly recommended not only for musicians and music fans, and anybody interested in creative interfaces and design.

One of the great challenges of performing electronic music is that the vibrating part of the instrument is the PA system. So without immediate proprioceptive feedback, how can the performance of electronic music be truly tactile? This question has preoccupied instrument designers from Theremin and Don Buchla to….well….international magicians of electronic musical instrument and interface design Passepartout Duo (Nicoletta Favari & Christopher Salvito). Join us at the Meat Market for the first in our MESS in Conversation series where MESS co-founder (and long time dabbler in problems of electronic music performance) Robin Fox hosts an in depth discussion with these extraordinary artists including a deep dive on the amazing Chromaplane designed by the pair in collaboration with KOMA Elektronik.

Based on their current practice of designing and building unique musical instruments, Passepartout Duo shares their creative process they call 'slow music'. The process spans from instrument design to recording, touching on the concept of music tools as entities with agency, influenced by theories in contemporary philosophy. They will discuss their instrument design process, and the role of a DIY approach to electronics in making new musical interfaces. More info available here.
